Anti-inflammatory Skincare – CBD or Hemp Oil?

What’s the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil? Although they can have very similar names and are often marketed in a similar manner, these two products have vital differences in their compositions which signify a difference in how they react with the human body. CBD oil is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the cannabis sativa plant, resulting in an extract which is rich in cannabinoids. Meanwhile, hemp seed oil is taken from the seeds of the plant, which contains lots of natural goodness, but is void of cannabinoids.

Skin inflammation can happen to each and every one of us. This is often a result of the body’s immune system acting in response to infections, diseases, and allergic reactions. Common causes of skin inflammation are dermatitis, psoriasis, and a variety of skin infections. When cells in your immune system come under attack a range of substances are released which widens blood vessels, making them more permeable. This allows them to be affected, leading to the symptoms associated with inflammation: redness, heat, and swelling.

In situations like these, we need to apply an anti-inflammatory to help our skin calm down.

Compared to CBD oil, hemp oil takes a more external approach. Hemp oil works to soothe inflammation with the omega-6 fatty acid Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This acts as an anti-inflammatory and encourages new cell generation and skin growth, which is extremely beneficial for those who suffer from conditions like acne and psoriasis.

Meanwhile, CBD works to control and manage inflammation via the endocannabinoid system. This is made up of receptors CB1 and CB2 located in our nervous system and auto-immune system. CBD will work systematically to find the problematic areas and calm it down through its promotion of homeostasis, which balances out the body’s functions. This interaction will also work to manage any pain that the body is experiencing in connection to the inflammation.

In June 2019, researchers at the University of Milan carried out a study on the uses of CBD and hemp oil as anti-inflammatories1 (1 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ptr.6400). They found that the two substances has “different effects” on pro-inflammatory mediators.

Whilst hemp oil has its dermatological anti-inflammatory benefits, CBD oil works in a far more effective way throughout the body as an anti-inflammatory. Hemp oil can be used to soothe an applied area, whereas CBD oil works systematically to find the area under attack and address the root of the issue.

CBD as an anti-inflammatory can be taken in various forms. If you wish to incorporate it into your daily routine as a way of addressing inflammation, CBD oil and CBD capsules are a good place to start; easy to take with great benefits. If you prefer topical application there is also a wide range of CBD skin care products which will supply your skin with the anti-inflammatories it needs.
